Deer Stalking Breaks
The majestic red deer are Scotland's largest wild land mammal, and an encounter with this iconic species is truly unforgettable. Whilst there are four species of deer found in Scotland (red, roe, fallow and sika), red and roe deer are the native species.
Deer are a huge asset to Scotland. Not only are they an important part of our rural economy and culture, but they also are an integral part of Scotland's biodiversity. They help to maintain some plant communities, create environments for seedling regeneration and also provide a source of fertilisation for the land and food for other species. However in places their high numbers and lack of natural predators mean they are having a negative impact in our landscape, such as preventing new trees from growing, damaging existing woodland, overgrazing and trampling our peatlands.
One way of managing the number of deer on the hills is through traditional stalking and culling. Not only does this help reduce the impact of the deer on the environment, but it is also a key tool to manage the ongoing health of the herd. This process is good practice and is actively supported by NatureScot, whose role is to protect and promote Scotland's natural heritage.
David Colthart, a local hill farmer , was born and brought up in Appin and he is passionate about protecting and preserving the natural environment.
In collaboration with neighbouring landowners he is offering the opportunity to join his team during the stalking season as he ethically and sustainably manages the number of red deer on the hill land of Appin. He complies with relevant legislation and follows the Code of Practice on Deer Management as set out by NatureScot.
